Kia Ora, Families
Welcome to the September Saturday School blog.
This month marks our first steps into Autumn for this year.
In the spirit of keeping active, this month we have been focusing on Sports.
Week 16, September 7th
Today's Sport subtopic was: Races.
We had a look at many different Olympic races, we talked about what sports we like, and discussed what looks easy/difficult. There are many lessons we can learn from races. Such as sportsmanship, perseverance, and humility. It was great talking about these broad but important topics with out friends. The story of "the tortoise and the hare", which we read together, is a very good example of the above life skills. We made racing caterpillars and enjoyed helping each other.

Week 17, September 14th
Today's Sport subtopic was: Team Sports.
This topic allowed us to think about what being a team means, why it is important to work together, and how we can encourage our team mates. We also discussed what team sports we know, how many players in a team, why a team is needed for these sports as opposed to playing them solo. Today's craft was "stacking cups". We decorated our own cups so we could participate in a team cup stacking race. We watched a couple of teams do this online, and then had a go for ourselves. It was so nice seeing everyone support and guide each other for their combined sucess.

Week 18, September 21st
Today's Sport subtopic was: Sports Equipment.
This sub-topic built really well on what we had learnt over the last couple of weeks. We talked about various different items used in specific sports, any items that can be used across a variety of sports, and equipment that we have ourselves. For our craft, we made our very own baseball bat and ball. We made these using our own hand shape, cutting it out and then decorating it. These became very individual and beautiful pieces.

Week 19, September 28th
Today's Sport subtopic was: Riding Sports - with a focus on Boats.
First, we took a look at the various kinds of boats that we might see, where we can use them, how many people can ride on them, and various other interesting details and facts. We learnt about surface tension, buoyancy and various other things that help boats float on water. We made paper boats for our craft, and tested them out on the water to see if they could float.
For the literacy component, we focused on the letter "Jj". We also practiced sounding out words using their phonics, and breaking down spelling.

Next Saturday (October 5th) there is no Saturday School, so we look forward to seeing everyone again Saturday, October 12th.
